2. HEALTH AWARENESS

Title of The Practice: Health Awareness

Objective:

Government Pt. Madhav Rao Sapre College, PendraRoad is located in the tribal area and most of our students belong to tribalfamilies with low financial status. Since their family members are illiterate, they do not pay attention towards health. College objective is to provide age-appropriateinformation about health and nutrition to the students in college and promotehealthy behaviour among them. Therefore, in order to create awareness abouthealth among the students the institution constituted Red Cross Society underwhich many programmes are organized for the students and staff of the college.Students are given instructions regarding personal hygiene like bathing, washing hands before and after meal, keep their nails and hair clean, brushtheir teeth twice a day, use sanitizer regularly, and keep their home andsurroundings clean and hygienic.

The Context:

The region is prone to water borne diseases like typhoidand is also marked as a region prone to malaria. Many of the areas are remoteand inaccessible, which makes health and preventive care a casualty for many dueto lack of proper awareness about health and hygiene. This has been taken up bythe administration of the college as one of the best practices practiced forwelfare of the students and the community at large.

The Practice:

A healthy society builds up a healthy nation. In thiscontext the college focuses one of its good practices on health and hygiene. Most of our students belong to tribal families. The COVID-19 pandemic hasunhinged the lives of people across the globe. In particular, more than 30million college students are home-schooling, yet there is little understandingof how academic workload, separation from school, and fear of contagion lead toa decrease in their health. The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic hasrapidly spread across the globe, causing massive disruptions to everyday life. For this the college conducted special programme on covid-19 and organized quizcompetition to create awareness about covid 19. Students are given informationabout corona (covid-19) disease and suggested measures for prevention of coronalike the importance of wearing mask, social distancing and following rules ofhygiene. Students are motivated to improve their hand washing habits and aremade aware of the significance of use of soaps and sanitizer. Students areinformed about regular hand washing with soap as a preventive measure against thecovid-19 pandemic.HIV/AIDS awareness programmes is organized in the college.AIDS Day is also celebrated in the campus to give information to the studentsregarding AIDS disease. Physical education is given prime importance in ourcollege which is very essential for fitness of the students. Students are made consciousabout “sound mind in a sound body”. Students are given information aboutbenefits of exercise that positively affect their psychology, emotions and evenspiritual life.‘The sounder the body, the sounder the mind that resides in it.’A healthy man is always happy and inclined to work and serve others.

As one of its best practices, the college undertakes various activities forhealth and hygiene. The institution celebrates International Yoga Day on 21st June.Students are given information about importance of yoga and meditation. WorldCancer Day is also celebrated in the campus.

Students are given knowledge about problems related to malnutrition andeffects of malnutrition during Nutrition Week. Malnutrition affects chances of survivalfor children, increasing their susceptibility to illness and reducing theirability to learn. Many children suffer from anemia which is caused bynutritional deficiency of iron and other essential minerals and vitamins in thebody. Similar programmeson health awareness, freedom from drugs and tobacco arealso conducted in the college with a view to increase the awareness of thestudents related to the issue.

Evidence of Success:

The college is creating awareness among the studentsand now our students are more conscious about their personal health. Mentalhealth problems can impact the academic performance and success of a collegestudent. Poor mental health contributes to lack of motivation and lack ofconcentration, which can lead to failing grades. Campus-wide mental healthresources for students to seek support could be the key to their academicsuccess. The college faculties are in regular in touch with students for anytype of problem of theirs. On their part the students also create awareness intheir village and society after being motivated by the college. During thecovid-19 pandemic, students of our college created awareness among the peoplein their locality about importance of washing hands with soap, proper sanitization, maintaining physical distance, wearing a mask etc. Mask distribution was alsodone by our students in their locality.

Problem Encountered And Resource Required:

This practice is not supportedby government and non-government organization. The institution has lack of fundto maintain such practice as the college is situated in tribal region withrural background. As students of this college came from remote area so there islack of medical facilities in their area. In many places ambulance service isnot possible because of uneven terrain.

Students of this college alsohesitate to share their problems.
